Consulting you won’t learn in a lecture.

Each semester, teams of eight UQ students work on 10-week projects for non-profits, with training and mentoring from industry partners. Students from every faculty and degree level can apply.

What you take away

Learn consulting skills, work with a client and meet other students and professional consultants.

  • Training from industry partners

    Consulting basics 101 and 201 and a presenting workshop, run by partner firms, cover structured problem solving, the core frameworks, slide design and public speaking before you need them.

  • Experience on a client project

    Work on a non-profit’s project for 10 weeks, write a report with your team and present your recommendations to the client and industry judges at pitch night.

  • Mentoring and a network

    A mid-semester check-in at a partner firm’s offices with personalised feedback from professional consultants, and a society of 356 members whose events draw 70 people on average.

A semester as a consultant

Here is what happens from applications through to pitch night.

    Start of February or July

    Apply

    The application portal opens at the start of February and July. It asks for your study details, a résumé and why you want to join.

    Start of semester

    Welcome drinks

    The semester opens with a semi-formal evening for new and existing members, with industry representatives in the room.

    Start of semester

    Consulting basics 101 and 201

    Two mandatory workshops from an industry partner: structured problem solving and the frameworks you will use on the project.

    Weeks 1 to 10

    The project

    You and seven other consultants, led by a team leader with project experience, research, analyse and test ideas for your client, with regular check-ins along the way.

    Mid-semester

    Check-in at a partner firm

    Your team visits the offices of a partner firm for personalised feedback on the project from professional consultants.

    A mandatory session on slide design and public speaking to help you prepare for pitch night.

    Project teams present their recommendations to the client and a panel of industry judges.

Where it can take you

After gaining project experience, you can apply to lead a team, oversee projects or join the executive.

  1. Start here

    Consultant

    Work in a team of eight, with training from industry partners and mentoring throughout the semester. Selection considers client needs, technical skills and potential to learn.

  2. Then

    Team leader

    Use your project experience to lead a team and guide its work. Be the client’s main contact for meetings and the final report.

  3. Then

    Consulting director

    Use your project experience to check progress and advise teams throughout the semester.

  4. And beyond

    Executive

    Runs the branch: the President, Head Consulting Director, Treasurer, Secretary and Vice Presidents for Marketing, Partnerships, People and Culture, and Events.

Any faculty. Any degree level.

Our consultants study engineering, law, humanities, medicine, finance and other subjects. Selection considers client needs, technical skills and potential to learn.

How selection works

  1. Step 1: Apply online

    When the portal opens, send your study details, a résumé and a few lines on why you want to join.

  2. Step 2: We review applications

    After the portal closes we read every application and get back to you about the next step.

  3. Step 3: Offer and team

    Eight consultants are chosen for each project from a pool of 200+ applicants, with skills and study backgrounds matched to the client’s needs, and placed with a team leader.

Welcome drinks, workshops at partner firms, check-ins, pitch night and the bits in between. The rest is on Instagram.
